Guidelines

sites.ku.dk is designed to aid the University of Copenhagen’s (KU) dialogue with the outside world.

The purpose of sites.ku.dk is to support the University’s core services, research and study programmes.

You are responsible for complying with current legislation at all times including guaranteeing that your input does not contravene any third-party’s rights (e.g. copyrighted text and images). KU reserves the right to remove content (either individual input or whole blogs) in special circumstances, as described in these guidelines.

Welcome

It is not our aim that these guidelines should make blogging any more difficult than is absolutely necessary. However, it is essential to clarify where rights and responsibilities lie in association with this service.

KU makes blogs available under the conditions outlined below. By visiting, setting up and/or posting content (e.g. writing comments), you accept the conditions.

The setting up of blogs is restricted to employees and students at the University of Copenhagen. Unauthorised blogs will be deleted without warning. The University of Copenhagen does not delete blogs because appointments have been terminated, but inactive blogs will be deleted after attempts have been made to contact the blog’s author.

1. Copyright

Standard: Creative Commons licence.
Unless you state otherwise, all material that you publish on sites.ku.dk – and to which you have copyright – will be licensed under a “Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 Denmark License“. This licence makes it possible to copy, distribute, present and perform your contributed content as long as you are credited as the author of the content and it is not used for commercial purposes. You also give permission for others to create and distribute derived works as long as they use the same licence as the one that covers your original content.

By using this licence, you make it possible for, e.g., RSS aggregators (e.g. www.overskrift.dk, www.blogbot.dk and www.technorati.com) to copy and distribute the content you publish on your blog.

Option: A more restrictive licence
If you would prefer a more restrictive licence to cover your content, you can do as follows:

  • if it is your own blog, you must remove the Creative Commons logo from your blog template
  • if you are writing on somebody else’s blog, you can place a full copyright notice on your comment(s): your name, copyright, © or (c), and the year.

Rights to KU
Notwithstanding the above, by using KU’s blog service, you give KU a non-exclusive, royalty-free and non-terminable licence to use your content in association with KU’s activities. This includes, but is not restricted to, without limitations, the right to copy, distribute, transfer, display in public, reproduce, edit, translate and reformat your content and/or to include your content in a collected work (e.g. in the form of a common RSS feed and in PR material).

2. Netiquette – rules and regulations

Publishing content
As a point of departure, you have the right to say what you like on your blog. However, as the service is available on KU’s servers and KU’s Internet domain, the University reserves the right to remove content from its blog service in special cases.

You have the right to post freely on your own blog and to freely comment on other people’s blogs, as long as the content does not contravene current legislation.

You must not use the University of Copenhagen’s name to recommend or promote products, organisations, political parties and/or candidates. You must not misrepresent your blog in such a way that your attitudes appear to be those of the University of Copenhagen.

KU’s blog service must not be used for commercial services. Similarly, the service must not be used to damage/disconnect another person’s computer, to circumvent safety procedures on the University’s or anybody else’s network, or to send out unwanted e-mails (spam).

You are responsible for ensuring that you actually have the right to publish any content that you do publish, and by publishing you accept sole responsibility for the content. The University of Copenhagen cannot be held responsible for content in your blog.

KU does not censor content
The Ministry of Justice’s “Vejledning om offentligt ansattes ytringsfrihed” (Guidelines for freedom of expression for public sector employees – pdf) are applicable to employees. KU considers statements published on its blog service as being comparable with statements made through mass media or other channels of publication. KU reserves the right to remove – without warning – content that we consider to be in contravention of current legislation.

Access to content
By reading content on KU’s blog service, you accept that the content of any given contribution or commentary is the author’s responsibility. All statements and opinions are the author’s own responsibility, and do not necessarily represent KU’s attitudes.

You accept that KU cannot be held responsible for the content, for defects and omissions, loss of content or financial loss as a result of the use of content on KU’s blog service.

3. Operations and no guarantees

KU’s blog service is offered “as is” and without guarantees for uptime or storage of data. The use of KU’s blog service is your own responsibility. You are also responsible for your own virus protection. KU does not monitor input or attached data for computer viruses.

4. Protection of personal information

See “Protection of personal information” for detailed information about the storage, exchange and publication of personal information on KU’s blog service.

5. Changes to guidelines

KU reserves the right to change the current guidelines without warning. Attempts will be made to post advance notification of changes in the support blog, but as the user it is your sole responsibility to make sure that you keep yourself up-to-date with any alterations to the guidelines.

6. Complaints about copyright infringements

The individual writer is responsible for the input being in agreement with the legislation at any given time. If you think that your copyright has been infringed by being copied without permission and/or by being made accessible on KU’s blog service, please contact directly the author of the blog on which you believe the infringement of copyright has taken place. If this proves impossible, please contact the blog administrator, who will assess whether KU agrees that an infringement has occurred, and if necessary remove the content concerned.

7. What if I stop working/studying at University of Copenhagen?

Blogs.ku.dk is a service, provided for all employees and students at University of Copenhagen and access is linked to your KU-username (eg. abc123). The content of your blog, however, is your own, and easily portable to another blog installation. It is easy to move your content if you leave UCPH or if you should decide to move your blog for other reasons – as WordPress (the blog software) is open source and uses web standards.

How to export your content: In your blog dashboard choose “Tools” and then “Export” (see this image) – this will provide you with an XML-file containing all your content, which you can then import to another wordpress installation eg. at WordPress.com or you can install WordPress at your own domain – it is open source software and you can download it here.

Did you forget to export your blog before you lost your access to the IT systems at UCPH? Send us an email at blogs@hum.ku.dk and we can provide you with an export file of your blog content.
